What is a Small Self-Administered Scheme (SSAS)?
A Small Self-Administered Scheme (SSAS) is a type of occupational pension scheme available to UK limited companies. It is established by the company as a trust for its directors and key employees, with a maximum of 11 members.
Unlike a personal pension or SIPP, a SSAS is a company pension. The members are also the trustees, meaning they have direct control over how the pension fund is invested and managed. There is no fund manager making decisions on their behalf — the trustees direct every investment decision.
A SSAS is registered with HMRC and regulated under UK pension legislation. Contributions made by the company are treated as a business expense and are fully deductible against corporation tax, subject to HMRC annual allowance limits.
The SSAS can hold a wide range of assets including commercial property, equities, bonds, and cash. Uniquely, it can also make loans back to the sponsoring employer — a feature not available in personal pensions or SIPPs.
A SSAS is one of the most powerful and flexible financial tools available to UK business owners, combining pension planning with active business strategy in a single, HMRC-compliant structure.
